About the Service:

Working from German into English I offer the following translation services:

Literary translations including novels, short stories, memoirs and magazine articles
Academic translations focussing on the humanities, especially European history
Journalistic translations with an emphasis on politics, social issues and current affairs
Technical translations covering computer networking, cabling and instructional materials
Business related translations encompassing such things as commercial correspondence, tender documentation, contracts and anything relating to project management

Apart from making a living as a translator my main reason for wanting to focus on German translation is to help to bring about a better cultural understanding of Germany in the English-speaking world by making available as much German literature in English language as possible.

German literature is very under appreciated in the English-speaking world, which is a pity because a lot of it is marvellous. It encompasses everything from swash-buckling tales written in a straightforward manner to deep philosophical explorations that probe the outer edges of the human experiences with great insight. There are darkly brooding meditations on the madness and folly of war, which contrast starkly with life affirming romantic works brimming with colour, sound and movement. Scurrilous takes on the main chapters of European history compete for the reader's attention with madcap adventures or gritty real life thrillers. Altogether the depth and definition of emotion, imagination and life committed to paper by German writers over the centuries represents a treasure trove of human perspectives fully deserving of the attention of the world's literati.

My Credentials as a German to English Translator:

On this page I provide details of my credentials as a professional translator working from German to English. Further references are available on request but in the meantime I hope that the information provided below will assure you of my abilities in this area.

Having worked in several different walks of life over the past 30-odd years from the military to the computer networking industry and having spent time living abroad and in the UK, I have amassed considerable life experience that serves me well when it comes to understanding the texts I am asked to translate. In addition to this general experience I have several specific language and translation qualifications, which I outline in the following.

Diploma in Translation from the Chartered Institute of Linguists

My most recent qualification and, if I may say so, the most prestigious, is the post graduate level Diploma in Translation (FHEQ Level 7) awarded by the Chartered Institute of Linguists upon successful completion of the relevant exam on the 20th of June 2010. This award specifically qualifies me to translate from German into English. This diploma says as much about a candidate's ability in English as in the source language as it places high demands upon the target text in terms of register, style, grammar and spelling as well as the appropriate use of technical jargon and idiom.

Diploma in German Language (KDS)

This diploma is awarded by the Goethe Institut, London, on behalf of the Ludwig Maximilians Universit
